John on a Dartmoor hike among granite rocks
Behind the boots

Hello, I'm John.

I’m a Plymouth-based bus driver. On my days off, I swap city roads for Dartmoor tracks, the South West Coast Path and occasional adventures further afield.

What draws me out is the mix of landscape and story. A stone row can make you wonder who stood there thousands of years ago; an aircraft memorial can stop a walk in its tracks. I enjoy the tors and views too, especially when the weather decides to cooperate.

My usual walks are around 10–15 miles, though I’ve also tackled longer charity challenges. I write about the whole day: the route, photographs, memorable places, wrong turns and honest verdict. If a waterfall underwhelms me, you’ll hear that as well.

Where to begin

Browse the hike finder, explore Dartmoor’s ancient sites, or read my Kitty Tor WWII memorial walk. New reports and photographs are added after each adventure.
